Throughout human history, rebellions have been the basis for people to speak out against unfairness of the dominating people. However many have been violent while others were peaceful protests, both are different ways that the people promote their cause.
“I think a lot of people think of it as violent. Someone could be trying to make a statement in like graffiti or something or crash a window,” sophomore Clara Thompson said.
Rebellions are often referred to as violent because the majority have included riots, violent protests, or methods that are attacking. There are large debates arguing whether violence can lead to positive impacts.
“Good things can come out of it. I’m not saying I’m for violence but I think good things can come out of it because it emphasizes your point and people actually notice it,” Thompson said.
Many of the biggest revolutions included rebellions that weren’t in any way considered peaceful, for example the American Revolution. In some cases, violence can bring lots of attention to a cause and what they’re fighting for. “Sometimes to get your point across you might have to do stuff that you don’t want to do just to get the point across,” sophomore Jacob Rudolph said.
Some believe that peaceful methods will never accomplish anything when trying to support a cause. Violence is often used in these situations to get a point across. Non-violence can be seen as unhelpful and that it really doesn’t have a huge effect.
“In the case of Martin Luther King, the whole thing was nonviolent and look what came out of that. They got their rights and what they wanted, they didn’t hurt anyone in the process,” Thompson said.
There are ways that non-violence can be superior and actually help a cause. Rebellions are ways for people to express ideas and causes that don’t agree with the exact rules of leaders and dominant people.
