Computer science classes offered too late for seniors
Davis High students often have many interests. Although there are many classes students can take that are relatable to their interests, one area at Davis High is significantly lacking; Computer Science.
Bill Gates once said, “The best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written.” For students to do this at Davis, they must do so on their own time. They cannot simply take a class and have the material taught to them. They have to do their own research and their own learning to attempt the science that is not already taught at school.
Computer Science students are not at a total loss however; at least, for students that aren’t seniors. Next year, Mr. Jerome is teaching a Computer Science and Software Engineering class.
“I don’t know much about the course yet, I haven’t gone to the training yet.” Jerome said. The class’ curriculum is from PLTW (Project Lead The Way), a group which focuses on teaching students Computer Science skills for the future.
From PLTW’s website, the program will use the coding language Python as a, “primary tool and incorporating multiple platforms and languages for computation, this course aims to develop computational thinking, generate excitement about career paths that utilize computing, and introduce professional tools that foster creativity and collaboration.”
Students interested in learning more about becoming a programmer or just about how their computer works can sign up for Computer Science and Software Engineering next year.
