What inspired you to become a teacher?
When I was in junior high, I had a PE teacher named Mrs. Edwards who really influenced me. Mrs. Edwards was also my volleyball coach in junior high, and she was so motivational as a teacher, coach and person. I wanted to teach and coach because of her.
How long have you been teaching, and what subjects do you teach?
This year is my 26th year at Davis High. I did my student teaching at Davis High as well back in 1999. I have two majors…..PE and English. I did my student teaching in both but found my love was in teaching English. I have only taught English since I’ve been teaching at Davis High. This year I teach English 11 and English 12.
What do you love most about teaching high school students?
High school students are so fun to teach because they’re just such good people, and it’s so fun to teach them in their last few years of school.
Did you always know you wanted to be a teacher, or did you take a different career path first?
I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. My mom was an elementary teacher, so I always saw what the home lifestyle as a teacher would be like.
What is the most memorable moment you’ve had as a teacher?
In the year 2006, I received the award of “Most Influential Teacher”. I was given a wooden award of an old “D” made out of the old bleachers from the old gym. I cherish this because I try so hard to help students and be there for them whenever they need it. I coached the girls’ soccer team here as well for five years. I loved those coaching years as well. Another most memorable time was just recently. Both my parents passed away last term, in November and then in December. I ended up being gone for a month because of everything. When I returned, my students were so kind to me. I guess the memorable thing to me is how nice my students are and how good my students are now and have always been over the years. We have such amazing students here at Davis High.
If you could teach any other subject, what would it be and why?
If I could teach any other subject, it would be Math or maybe even an Interior Design class. I almost went into teaching Math but chose English instead. I would choose Interior Design because I love decorating and designing.
What’s something your students would be surprised to learn about you?
I was in a car accident when I was in college, where I lost my short-term memory as a result of the accident. I had to stop playing soccer in college because of this, and I had to work on healing and helping my brain get better. It was a very hard time in my life, but I learned a lot about myself and life.
Do you have a favorite book, movie, or TV show that you recommend to your students?
My favorite book: Les Misérables
Movie: The Notebook
TV Show: Dateline
What’s your favorite way to unwind after a long day at school?
I like to have a Coke or a Strawberry Lemonade (or any lemonade) and sit and watch a movie or an episode of Dateline. I also like to watch Wheel of Fortune……one day I hope to go on Wheel of Fortune.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received as a teacher?
Make sure the students know you care about them. Each student has something going on in their life, so it’s so important they know you care about them.
