On January 29th, an American Airlines plane was approaching the Reagan
National Airport in Arlington, Virginia. The flight carried sixty-seven people on the plane,
both staff and customer, each there for different reasons and each excited to reach their
destination. The people on the flight included ice skaters, parents, siblings, spouses,
and more. However, the plane never made it to the airport, as it collided with a US Army
Black Hawk Helicopter over the Potomac River. After searching, it has been confirmed
that there were no survivors.
The American Airlines flight mostly consisted of ice skaters who were returning
from a camp in Wichita, Kansas. A total of twenty-eight of them, including both students
and coaches. Children as young as eleven years old were on the flight, along with their
parents. There were renowned coaches and esteemed figure skaters. The young
children who were being trained were believed to become the next generation of
Olympians for the United States. They all showed beautiful potential throughout their
lives and in the sport they participated in.
Along with these talented skaters who were taken too soon, victims also included
the pilot, co-pilot, and flight attendants. All have family at home that were expecting
them to come home, but they didn’t. It was speculated that the US Army Black Hawk
Helicopter was the aircraft to collide with the airplane. The airplane was flying the
course it was intended to fly, so it wasn’t the plane’s fault. The pilot and co-pilot were
just doing their job, the flight attendants were serving the passengers. No one deserved
the fate that was met that terrible night.
As with any event that attracts the attention of millions, there are theories as to
whether the collision was intended and not an accident. The military on the US Army
Helicopter were known to be highly experienced pilots with many flight hours behind
them. Therefore, many people don’t understand how the collision could have possibly
happened with the American Airlines plane following their route and with highly
experienced pilots. So it is speculated that the accident wasn’t much of an accident at
all. However, Trump and other authorities have confirmed that they will not be
speculating the cause of the deaths.
Under further study, the American Airlines plane was found in the river with no
emergency services deployed. There were no slides, floats, or anything to help
passengers that might have survived the incident. While at first a search party was sent
out of find survivors, the effort quickly turned into a recovery party. It was found out
pretty quickly that there were no survivors from both the plane or the helicopter. Many
bodies have been found in the river, but to this day bodies are still trying to be found.
Parts of both aircrafts are missing along with the people. Parties are currently still
searching for the lost in the Potomac River.
