Disclaimer: Spoilers! Also, this is my opinion, so you don’t have to agree with me. Honestly, this is less about how great the movie was and more about how much I enjoyed watching them. These are going to be ranked from worst to best so wait until the end to see my favorite!
Chamber of Secrets
This movie was ok. It doesn’t show how great the movies are and although the first one didn’t have the best plot this one was kind of creepy like the blood on the walls and Harry talking in Parseltongue (snake language). It was darker than the first one, but it was funny.
Order of the Phoenix
I did not enjoy this movie mainly because of Umbridge. I just really hate her. She literally abuses the students and makes the dumbest rules. She tries to fire Trelawney but luckily doesn’t succeed because of McGonagall and the queen that she is. The kiss with Cho, that’s just not ok. They just completely ignore the fact that the picture of Cedric, her last dead boyfriend, is in the background. Despite all of that I also think this movie was good like the scenes where Harry and his friends get together in secret to learn to defend themselves, and we get a glimpse of how wizards and witches really fight.
Deathly Hallows Part 1
I honestly think that this movie was good, but it felt like it was leading up to something for the whole movie and we had to wait until the second part to really see all the action. I loved the wedding with Fleur and Bill, it was kind of refreshing to see a happy moment despite all the chaos. I also found it funny when they all drank the Polyjuice potion to look like Harry. It was confusing but a fun moment. I really didn’t like when they killed Dobby, I don’t see the point in killing him off he was such a kind and loyal elf but I’m glad he at least died showing his loyalty. He deserved so much better. I didn’t enjoy watching Ron getting mad at Harry and Hermione and leaving. I thought he would be more mature after the fourth movie when he gets mad at Harry. The scene with Harry and Hermione dancing was awkward to watch but at least they had a happy moment during the chaos. I liked the horcrux storyline and it made room for a good comeback for Ron saving Harry and joining the trio again. I also liked the story about the Deathly Hallows. I think it added a dark twist to the invisibility cloak we had seen in the past and it also added to the scarier aspect of the movie. Overall, this movie was great. I just felt they added too many unnecessary filler scenes.
The Half Blood Prince
I really liked the storyline with Harry having Slughorn as his new potion’s teacher so that Dumbledore could find out about his past with Tom Riddle (Voldemort) and how Harry finds “The Half Blood Prince’s” potion’s book. The romance between Ron and Lavender makes me nauseous but the scene where Ron eats the chocolates with the love potion meant to be given to Harry makes up for it. I feel like the romance shouldn’t have made up that much of the movie and it should’ve been more focused on the important aspects of the movie like Voldemort and his backstory. I admit I enjoyed finally seeing Hermione realize she likes Ron. I thought the scene where Harry attacks Draco was unexpected but showed another side to Harry and a more vulnerable side to Draco. I felt like I was confused when Draco came on screen at first but eventually, we figure out he isn’t happy with what he is ordered do and it is really life or death for him. The ending was crazy seeing Snape be the one to kill Dumbledore for Draco and I didn’t understand that Snape was also going through so much when I first watched this movie.
Deathly Hallows Part 2
After watching all the movies, it was sad seeing it all end especially as such a dark movie. I think it did live up to its expectations. I felt like they used the Polyjuice potion a lot in the movies, but I did enjoy seeing Hermione as Bellatrix even though it was hard to watch her pretend. Finding out Harry is a horcrux was crazy and really made it hard to see any way to defeat Voldemort. The way everyone at Hogwarts came together and seeing characters from the other films come help was great. I thought it was weird that none of the kids were evacuated, but there wasn’t any time. Putting the Slytherin kids in the dungeons was kind of dumb because they needed everyone they could to fight, and they didn’t even give them a chance to prove themselves when Draco and his friends are the only Slytherins that we know are on Voldemort’s side. The battle was played out well and the deaths of well-known characters from the movies showed the harsh reality of the fight. Harry dying and going to the limbo was confusing and kind of disturbing when we saw the being that represented Voldemort. I thought it was a very emotional moment seeing Harry’s parents, Sirius Black, and Remus Lupin before he died. I liked how they didn’t drag this movie out since it is the shortest of all the films. The ending was not my favorite seeing everyone as parents. I think the way the characters looked was confusing, Hermione looked the same and Draco looked at least forty years old. Harry’s kid, Albus Severus Potter, was worried about being in Slytherin. Harry decided to say he was named after two headmasters and one of them is a Slytherin completely ignoring the fact that Snape is the Slytherin and killed Albus was weird to me even though Snape kind of redeems himself. Despite all that I do like seeing these characters finally being able to be happy and not having to wonder what was going to happen to them.
Sorcerer’s Stone
This movie is so nostalgic and because of that I couldn’t place it any lower. Getting to see Harry escape his hard life living with his uncle, aunt, and cousin and being told he is a wizard was great. Harry, Hermione, and Ron becoming friends was fun. The Christmas scene is great seeing Ron and Harry connecting and making Harry feel like he is cared about. The scene with the huge chess board is such an icon part now. Seeing them explore this magical place and figuring out secrets together while still being a wholesome movie makes this movie one of the most interesting since not only are we curious but so are they.
Goblet of Fire
I was debating whether to put this as the best movie, but I ultimately decided that Prisoner of Azkaban is the best overall. This movie is the funnest to watch in my opinion because we get to see the Triwizard tournament and meet new characters like Cedric (one of my favorites) and other characters that come to visit the school. I think this movie looks super chill in comparison to the others although they’re fighting dragons, sirens, and running through a huge, enchanted maze. I loved moments like the Yule Ball, it’s fun to see how the characters acted in the dance. When Harry and Cedric get to the end of the maze, touch the trophy and transport to see Voldemort you realize the whole tournament was set up for Harry. I loved that plot twist, but I hated when Cedric died. That was depressing. I also loved the plot twist where Mad-Eye Moody wasn’t himself and was Barty Crouch Jr. Overall, this movie has always been one of my favorites to watch.
Prisoner of Azkaban
I think after Chamber of Secrets it was such an improvement and is the best for many reasons. You can tell the acting and the humor is better than in the first two movies. The movies take a twist with a darker appearance but there are still funny moments like the Defense Against the Dark Arts class with the Boggarts and the scene with Buckbeak getting mad at Draco and him crying. The introduction to Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Sybill Trelawney made the movie more interesting. The introduction to the Marauders map and finding out Hermione is time traveling to go to extra classes also just added so much to the film. I loved the mystery to the movie and how we all think that Sirius is the villain and find out Peter Pettigrew is (Ron’s rat hahaha). I loved seeing Sirius and Lupin reunite and become friends again even though this was the first time we met them. Every single scene in this movie is thought out and everything looks so magical. To understand how good this movie is, you need to watch it.
These movies are great to watch if you aren’t sure what to watch, especially now during Fall and Winter. I really hope you enjoyed reading my ranking and thoughts on the movies.
