Davis High School’s mascot, Dartman, is the heart of our school spirit. Whether he’s running out with the football team at games, energizing the mob, or cheering on every one of Davis’s teams, Dartman plays a vital role in uniting our dear old Davis High School. Behind the face paint is Lucas Hill, a student who goes above and beyond to support our events and keep the tradition alive. As iconic as Davis High itself, Dartman has evolved over the years but remains a symbol of strength and school pride.
Ever wonder what it’s like to step into his shoes? I sat down with Lucas to uncover the person behind the mask and answer some frequently asked questions about our legendary mascot!
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
How did you get selected to be Dartman?
L: “When I ran for student body officer, during our meeting with advisors, basically they ask you these questions, ‘What does Dartman mean to you’ and ‘how you’d be a good one’. So based on that and based on what they overall think of you they choose you. I don’t really know, I’ll be honest, but that’s just what I do know.”
Does Dartman have a catchphrase? If not, what would it be?
L: “Dartman doesn’t really have a catchphrase. If he did have one, oh, that’s so hard, there could be so much stuff. It could be something generic like ‘go darts’ or ‘it’s darting time’. That’s horrible, I know, there are not a lot of things that can go with Dartman.”
What do you think makes a great mascot?
L: “I think dedication and taking priority in what you got chosen to do. You have to have school spirit. You have to love the school and like supporting it and it should be something you love doing instead of being a chore”
What does school spirit mean to you?
L: “To me, it means just having this love for your school and what you do in your school. whatever you’re a part of or passionate about, that is like contributing to your school and fellow classmates and community. That’s school spirit right there.”
If Dartman had a sidekick, what would it be and why?
L: “I don’t really know… maybe get like a little kid from an elementary school who loves Davis High and give them a little suit like Dart Boy or Dart Girl. You know, they could just be my little sidekick and help me with stuff. And we just do sick things together, that would be cute.
Have you ever been recognized as Dartman outside of school? What’s the story?
L: “Yes I have, There’s a couple, but I’ll tell you this one because it was not even in Kaysville or anywhere near Davis High. Once I was on a date with my girlfriend, and we went for ice cream at Iceberg in Syracuse, and I go up to the cash register and I’m ordering for the both of us. The kid at the cash register cuts me off and says, “Wait, are you Dartman?” and I was like, “Yeah, how you doing dude?” And we just kind of talked for a bit. It was honestly kind of funny because I was on a date and I didn’t expect that, it caught me off guard. He ended up being a student here at Davis too.
Do you have any pre-game rituals or routines?
L: “Every time before a game, I just pray that I can be the best example of who I am and who my family is, and what Davis stands for. Also, I put my eye black on, my face/ war paint on, before every game to Viking music, I don’t know why but it’s awesome. My favorite is “I can go the distance” by this Viking dude.”
What does Dartman symbolize to you?
L: “Dartman symbolizes a tradition, a tradition of Unity, friendship, and of Davis High’s legacy! Dartman symbolizes and represents everyone that is and has attended Davis High! Through I am Dartman, I believe we need more than just one Dartman. Everyone at Davis High is a “Dartman”! Dartman is a friend to everyone, Dartman strives and succeeds to bring all of Davis High together and unite them! He brings forth school spirit! So basically, I think Dartman symbolizes Davis High’s tradition of unity”
What advice do you have for future mascots?
L: “Don’t mess up. I’m kidding, but some advice I have for a future Dartman or just any mascot is to just love what you do. Don’t get burnt out. Remember that you got chosen for a reason, and for a while, you may think that you have to live up to something or wonder if you’re good enough but in reality, you are. Support your school and be nice to everybody, you know?”
