Davis High School is known for its sports and keeping the tradition. Students are proud to say that they go to Davis High or that they are on a sports team at the school. There is one team at Davis High School that not many students know of. That is Dance Company. Some will argue that Dance is not a sport, and that is an art. Here is the urban dictionary meaning of the word sport. “An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” Some argue that it is not a sport due to that it leads more to an art topic. This can be true and has more of an art background than other sports and can be an art to watch. That shouldn’t defeat the hard work that goes behind the scenes. I asked a member of Davis High School Dance Company Jaeli Zundel who is a sophomore, and this is her first season on the time. I wanted to ask her how she felt about Davis Dance Company here at Davis High and what thinks about how they are treated. I asked her, “Do you think Dance is a sport?” She stated, “Dance is a sport because it is a hard physical activity like every other sport.” Then to follow up her statement I asked her “Then if it is a sport how is it involved in Dance Company,” she stated. “It involves in Dance Company because we all work as a team and we’re able to work on physical endurance and strength and work on pushing ourselves.” I then asked if she thinks “it’s an art or a sport,” she stated. “I do think it’s a sport for sure, but I don’t want to discredit the fact that it is also an art. I think that we’re able to express artwork through our movement through our bodies and we’re also able to compete as a team through physical activity leaning it towards more of a sport.”
 

I then went on to ask Brooklyn Agnello who is a junior at Davis High and has been on
the team for 2 seasons, how she felt. I asked her, “Do you think Dance is a sport or an art.”
She states “I feel as dance is considered more of an art than a sport despite requiring a great
deal of athleticism. Dance is an expressive form of art, a way to convey a story, it can make you
feel something.” I then asked, “Do you feel as if Dance Company is forgotten about, due to the
fact it’s considered an art and not a sport. Brooklyn states, “I feel as Dance Company
sometimes is forgotten about. Many consider dance not to be a sport so often whenever sports
are discussed it is yet to be included, whereas it is not a classic art form, so it lacks being
spoken of in that aspect as well.” I then went back to ask Jaeli Zundel if she felt the same way
on that as Brooklyn did. Jaeli then went on to continue with that she feels, “Though we are
forgotten by the school because we aren’t on the big banister in the gym. We’re not on the
Davis High website or the school calendar for upcoming performances that we have like,
football, soccer, drill, color guard, and other sports are involved. At the school, we are seen
as more of an art than we are a sport. We are an art formed sport, it’s not fair that we keep
being pushed back and we deserve the same recognition.” These dancers state that dance is a sport, but in the end, it is also an art. It should be recognized for both. The Davis High Company has seemed to be pushed back behind all the other sports, clubs, and art at the school.  

We don’t truly know why this is. Why shouldn’t they be given the same spotlight?
Overall, in the end, The Davis High Dance Company isn’t getting the same amount of
treatment as the other sports at Davis High School do. Hopefully, one day that can change and
there can be more recognition to be spread around the school. They work hard as a team,
compete at points, and they have an art aspect to it. Why should they not be able to have that
golden moment too’.
