The original showrunner of The Office, Greg Daniels, is set to do a reboot of the show.
The Office ended its impressive run after nine seasons. However, fans will be getting more of the
iconic show if the project moves forward successfully in its development. Very little is known
about the reboot yet, so there is room for speculation. What are all the details? What does a
reboot even mean? Is the original cast returning? Do people even want to see The Office make a
return? There are still so many questions that have yet to be answered.
Details
The Office ended in 2013 and ever since it ended there has been talks of a continuation to
some degree of the show. Before the Writers Guild of America went on strike there were
discussions between the studio (NBC) and the showrunner (Greg Daniels) about doing a reboot
of the Office. Now that the writers’ strike has ended These discussions have been made more
public. The original showrunner wants to return to the show’s original “mockumentary” format.
There is still a long time to go before the show is ready to release. We will have to wait to see
what NBC and Greg Daniles are cooking up.
Type of Reboot
The Term “reboot” is used loosely. We still don’t know what kind of reboot the new
show is going to be. It might be a revival to the show. If it’s a revival that would pretty much
mean that we would get a tenth season of the same show and it would be a direct continuation. A
revival for the series would show returning characters that we have come to love.
Another way they could go about rebooting The Office would be a soft reboot. A soft
reboot would most likely take place in the same continuity, but there would be new characters
working at the iconic Dunder Mifflin. If the show is a soft reboot, then that would allow there to
be loose threads connecting to the old show, which could mean cameos or references to old
characters from the original show.
A Soft Reboot to the show seems like the most likely option but another way they could
go about it is to do a hard reboot. A hard reboot would be a completely new continuity that
would just take inspiration from the old show. In a hard reboot there would be no retuning
characters or storylines. If The Office gets a hard reboot than that could mean it wouldn’t even
have to take place in the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin that we have grown to love. It could
take place in a totally new type of office.
The last option is a remake, which would probably get the most fan backlash. A remake
would basically be the same show that we have already seen with the same characters except the
characters would be recast with new actors and the story would be modernized. A full remake
would most likely be unpopular because fans wouldn’t want to see different people try to play
their favorite characters. The reason The Office was so loved from the beginning is because the

actors worked so well together as these quirky characters, so if they recast then it will not feel the
same.
Original Cast
How would the original cast feel about The Office returning? Rainn Wilson, who
famously portrayed Dwight Schrute in The Office has an interesting idea of how they could get
the band back together. When Rainn Wilson was on “The Drew Barrymore Show” he stated, “I
think it would be: (Dwight) gets a call from corporate to get everyone back in the office and
everyone is resistant, so, one at a time, Dwight has to kidnap every Office cast member and bring
them into Dunder Mifflin in some kind of obscure and somewhat inappropriate way.”
The star of The Office, Steve Carell, who played the iconic character of Michael Scott,
has opposing thoughts to Rainn Wilson. Steve Carell Is not so pumped up on the possibility of
The Office retuning. In 2018 Steve Carell told Time Magazine “I’ve never thought of it as a
good idea. I think it existed in that time and with those people and it felt right. There was
something special about it, and I guess it’s an odd way to put it, but I love it too much to ever
want to do it again. It’s too special to me in my heart in that period of time.”
If The Office can’t get Steve Carell to come back than the next best option must be John
Krasinski. John Krasinski played the fan favorite character, Jim Halpert in The Office. Here is
what Krasinski had to say to Esquire about reprising his role as Jim Halpert. “The Office was
absolutely everything to me, I mean, it is my beginning and my end. I’m pretty sure at the end of
my career I’ll still be known for Jim. That was my first experience with Hollywood. It was the
first creative family I’ve ever had. In many ways they will always be the most important people
in that most important experience in my career. So yeah, if they did a reunion, I would absolutely
love to do it.”
It is still not known if the intentions of the creative team behind the reboot is to bring
back the old cast. If they want to bring back the old cast than they will be able to convince some
of the actors, but others seem to have moved on completely from their roles. Perhaps getting new
actors would be smarter because it would give the show a fresher start, but if you don’t have the
original cast then will the magic be lost?
Conclusion
Fans of The Office have mixed feelings on if they even want the sitcom to return. On one
hand it has been a long time and many people have been clamoring for it, but on the other hand it
is not going to feel the same as the original and it may not satisfy the audience. The Office was
lightning in a bottle, from the cast to the creative team behind the series everything just worked
perfectly. Can the team for The Office reboot capture the same energy as the original show
without it feeling old and overdone? In order to do this, they must have fresh ideas while keeping
the charming sensibilities of the original show. If the reboot of the series disappoints us than it is
fine, we will still have the original nine seasons to rewatch endlessly. If the reboot does deliver
than the same energy of the original show will return, and we can enjoy more of The Office. We
will just have to wait and see.
